Dans le cadre de l’appel à projets « France 2030 : La Grande Fabrique de l’Image », en partenariat avec l’École Européenne des Beaux-Arts de Bretagne (EESAB) et l’Association Française du Cinéma d’Animation, Films en Bretagne a développé le projet Génération(s) Start Motion.
L’équation est la suivante : il s’agit de constituer un Hub International de l’animation stop-motion, appuyé sur le développement local en Bretagne, qui doit affirmer un leadership français dans une démarche d’ouverture européenne.
En partenariat formation-industrie avec deux des sociétés de production et deux des studios français les plus conséquents du secteur de l’animation stop-motion en Europe, en partenariat pédagogique rapproché avec L’École Européenne Supérieure d’Arts de Bretagne (EESAB), en partenariat culturel et évènementiel avec l’Association Française du Cinéma d’Animation (AFCA), en partenariat R&D avec le laboratoire Compositic (laboratoire de recherche appliquée rattaché au CNRS et hébergé par l’Université Bretagne Sud), Génération(s) Start Motion est un projet ambitieux visant à renforcer et à significativement renouveler les ressources humaines de l’animation stop-motion en France et en Europe, accompagnant entre autre une adoption transversale et transformative des nouvelles technologies.
Préside à cette entreprise de faire de Génération(s) Start Motion un pool public de formation et d’accompagnement de la filière animation stop-motion – nous nous attachons à réunir les conditions d’accessibilité, de diversité et d’égalité des chances concernant la formation, autant qu’à la diffusion d’un service public d’éducation artistique et culturelle (EAC), avec les partenaires compétents de tous les territoires de Bretagne, mais également des pays qui font partie de ce projet. Ce projet d’envergure européenne, s’articule autour de cinq volets :
- un plan pluriannuel de formation : formation initiale généraliste d’une jeune génération de talents de l’animation stop-motion, formation continue de spécialisation des jeunes talents, formation des professionnels aguerris en hyperspécialisation (nouvelles techniques, innovation), en accompagnement vers des fonctions « cadres » et des « mobilités de métiers » ;
- une résidence artistique de développement : résidence de développement de premiers projets grand-format (séries et longs-métrages), en lien avec les sociétés de production et avec les acteurs de l’éducation à l’image – articulation notamment avec le Festival d’Animation de Rennes ;
- un programme d’éducation à l’image soutenant des projets d’initiation à l’animation stop-motion pour les enfants et les jeunes ;
- un projet de recherche innovant au travers du « Green Puppet Lab » : recherche matière dans un double objectif d’éco-transition et de santé au travail pour les professionnels de l’animation stop-motion – en partenariat avec l’EESAB et le laboratoire de recherche appliqué ComposiTIC (Lorient) émanant du CNRS et hébergé par l’Université de Bretagne Sud ;
- un observatoire appliqué de l’animation stop-motion au niveau pan européen : collecte de données quantitatives et qualitatives, promotion de l’excellence française de l’animation stop-motion à l’international, mise en réseau intergénérationnelle des professionnels de l’animation stop-motion en Europe, communication dynamique du projet Génération(s) Start Motion (promotion, évaluation, expérimentation).
Dans la continuité d’une expérimentation conduite à périmètre régional grâce à l’EESAB de Lorient et à la Région Bretagne (2018/2019), Génération(s) Start Motion propose ainsi de stimuler et d’accompagner une transition majeure du secteur de l’animation stop-motion en France et en Europe de l’ère du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel du 20ème siècle à celle du 21ème siècle. Il s’agit de faire cheminer un secteur d’excellence artisanale vers sa mutation industrielle, dans un environnement intégrant nouveaux récits et nouveaux formats, nouvelles technologies et hybridations, dans un environnement intégrant pleinement les enjeux de transition (écoresponsabilité, santé des personnes, innovation/recherche).
GENERATION(S) START MOTION a reçu la confirmation du soutien de l’état au titre du dispositif « France 2030 : La Grande Fabrique de l’Image ».

In the context of the « France 2030: La Grande Fabrique de l’Image » call for projects, and in partnership with the European School of Fine Arts of Brittany (EESAB) and the French Animation Cinema Association (AFCA), Films en Bretagne has developed the Génération(s) Start Motion project.
The equation is as follows: the goal is to establish an International Stop-Motion Animation Hub, rooted in local development in Brittany, which aims to assert French leadership within a framework of European openness.
In training-industry partnership with two of the largest French production companies and two of the most significant stop-motion animation studios in Europe, in close educational collaboration with the European School of Fine Arts of Brittany (EESAB), in cultural and event partnership with the French Animation Cinema Association (AFCA), and in R&D partnership with the ComposiTIC laboratory (a CNRS-affiliated applied research laboratory hosted by the University of Southern Brittany), Génération(s) Start Motion is an ambitious project aiming to strengthen and significantly renew the human resources of stop-motion animation in France and Europe, supporting, among other things, a cross-cutting and transformative adoption of new technologies.
At the heart of this endeavor is the goal of making Génération(s) Start Motion a public training and career development hub for the stop-motion animation sector. We are committed to ensuring accessibility, diversity, and equal opportunities in training, as well as promoting a public service for artistic and cultural education (EAC), working with competent partners across all territories of Brittany and the countries involved in this project.
This Europe-wide project is structured around five key components:
- A multi-year training plan:
- Generalist initial training for a new generation of stop-motion animation talent,
- Continuing education for young professionals specializing in stop-motion,
- Advanced specialization for experienced professionals (new techniques, innovation),
- Training support for career advancement into managerial roles and career mobility.
- An artistic development residency:
- A development residency for first large-scale stop-motion animation projects (series or feature films),
- Collaboration with production companies and with media literacy stakeholders,
- Integration with the Rennes Animation Festival.
- An image education program:
- Supporting introductory stop-motion animation projects for children and young people.
- An innovative research project via the « Green Puppet Lab »:
- Material research with a dual focus on eco-transition and workplace health for stop-motion professionals,
- In partnership with EESAB and the ComposiTIC applied research laboratory (Lorient), affiliated with CNRS and hosted by the University of Southern Brittany.
- A European-wide applied stop-motion animation observatory:
- Collecting quantitative and qualitative data,
- Promoting French excellence in stop-motion animation internationally,
- Intergenerational networking of stop-motion professionals across Europe,
- Dynamic communication for Génération(s) Start Motion (promotion, evaluation, experimentation).
Building on an initial regional experiment conducted with EESAB Lorient and the Brittany Region (2018/2019), Génération(s) Start Motion aims to stimulate and support a major transition in the French and European stop-motion animation sector — from the 20th-century era of cinema and audiovisual production to the 21st-century industry.
This transition involves elevating a sector rooted in artisanal excellence into its industrial evolution, within an environment that integrates new narratives, new formats, new technologies, and hybrid approaches—while fully addressing contemporary challenges such as eco-responsibility, worker health, and innovation/research.
GÉNÉRATION(S) START MOTION has received official confirmation of state support under the « France 2030: La Grande Fabrique de l’Image » program.
